This ever happen to you?
You post your new music on Facebook to see what friends and family think of it only to get sarcastic remarks. OK, maybe my stuff just totally sucks and I can't see it. Does this ever happen to anyone else or is just me? I play everything but the drums (digital). http://www.myspace.com/rubyproject

I play everything but the drums (digital). http://www.myspace.com/rubyproject | I've had this sort of thing happen to me a lot - not via facebook (I'm too old and square to be into that), but I've given people CDs and tapes and emailed mp3s of stuff that I thought was great, only to have people laugh or make silly comments that clearly show that they didn't bother really listening. The problem isn't you... it's that when you create art (music, graphics, poetry, creative writing...) people usually don't realize how much of yourself you invest in it, and they really don't take it seriously. I have even gotten this from other musicians - years ago I sent a CD of one of my first really good studio recordings to my brother (a person who devoted his life to playing and composing music) thinking that he'd at least give me words of encouragement. I was really proud of this recording; my playing was great, I wrote a lot of the material, and the overall production was good (we invested a lot of time and effort into it). I got back a letter from him that sounded like I wrote a parody song in 5 minutes and sent it to him as a joke. I felt about 2 inches tall after I read it.
If people did take your stuff seriously, and it really did suck, you would either get polite white lies telling you it's good or legitimate constructive criticism, not jokes and sarcasm. The only thing I can suggest is that you make music for yourself, and ignore any opinions that don't respect that you're serious about this on some level.

I'm thinking and oddball 80s action movie. Sounds like music from that. |

It's the beginning fo the 3rd Millenium & this is the Internet. You don't have to read or respond to the stuff you don't like. Remember the people who gave you a hard time. Maybe they just aren't your friends? You should still be civil & polite but, maybe you don't have to pay attention to them?
I don't use MySpace or Facebook. Isn't there a block sender tool on those sites? FWIW, I think you deserve credit for making the recording & posting it where others can listen & comment. You are on the learning curve. Take what you can to make your music better. Try not to take the rest with you when you walk away from the keyboard. If you absolutely must vent, reply to the sniping with warm, sincere Thank You's, that sound like one of those anonymous replies you get from automated websites. 8-)

If you put it out there for your friends and family to comment on and they DON'T like it at all, what would you expect them to say? If you trust them (and I am positive you do) to give you their honest opinion, don't get ruffled up if they tell you so. Good or bad.
It's kinda like when I was young and let a ground ball go through the wickets. The old man didn't go and hack on me for it, he told me "Good game kid". Not entirely honest, but he's politely sayin "at least you tried".
Absolutely write for yourself only. If others like it, bonus. If they don't, who really cares? I've been ruining music for others for years, but at least it's mine.
Keep writing and never quit playing..........

| | | | Don't pay attention to what people say on kiddy sites like Facebook or Myspace. Alot of people know that no one will know who they are, and just say things because they are cowardly jerks with nothing better to do. If you want a (much) better quality musical input and constructive criticism, only pay attention to people from music oriented sites like Talkbass.

I have developed a certain circle of friends (musicians as well) who appreciate what I'm writing and can give me honest feedback. I no longer send original MP3s to my brother, for example. Of course, he's a comedian, so what the heck was I expecting? |

Thanks to everyone who listened to my stuff.
I think that some of it has to do with this being a solo project. I've been in bands who's material really, really sucked and never got this level of snark. Not from family. My brother said it reminded him of an episode of Friends were Ross got a keyboard and that it needed helicopter sounds.
Hmmmmm?
Anyway, I like them and with every song I get better and I have a million other songs left to write and record.
