Great Thread, I LOVE great Melody, So here's my five:

1] Don't let me be Lonely tonight- James Taylor, it's been covered by Eric Clapton and Michael Brecker. Is there a songwriter in the world that makes complicated stuff sound simple like JT?

2] Naima- John Coltraine, Just great melody!

3] James- Pat Metheny, He has so many great ones, but I played this one for a friend of mine from church last week who had no jazz background. His comment "it sounds like a great hymn",

4] Old Folks-Miles Davis, Great melody and sick trumpet solo!

5] Round Midnight- Thelonious Monk. Great lyrics, powerful melody line and extremely advanced harmonically like all Monk.

I love Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder and it was impossible to leave them out. For Stevie: For once in my life, and Steely Dan: Do it again . I concentrated on songs not solo wankers or great CD's. Too me what makes a great song is a melody that sticks. My CD list would probably be different, but how can you do a five best list? maybe a ten best next time?

If you've never heard heard Santana's Caravanserai you really should check out Doug Rauch's phenomenal playing on side one.
