I wouldn't call it famous, although it was on a soundtrack of a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game, so people have listened to it. Other than that, I guess that Eminem song is famous.

As you have already mentioned the rest of the album is just samples from the Old School....

LL Cool J was active just a couple years prior to Licensed to Ill (released 1986), yet he didn't start churning out his most famous songs ("I Need Love," "Going Back to Cali," "Momma Said Knock You Out," the list goes on) until after 87.
I would understand this if we're just talking about Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Sugarhill Gang, etc., obviously pioneers in the art, or a certain stylistic element prevalent in the albums mentioned (soul/r&b/funk inspired), but on a timeline the Beasties are fairly old. [I think it's weird that the original poster would discount them as not being classic.] Quote:

Pardon me if I'm drawing up wild assumptions, but I think it seems like the Beastie Boys are being discounted by the original poster as "not classic" because they're white. If I'm wrong then I apologize. I'm not a huge Beastie Boys fan, but I've seen them as a pretty big influence on rap music despite the fact that many discount them. (And yes, I know that House of Pain has also been mentioned.) Maybe I'm just confused as to what "classic" is supposed to mean. Are we talking soul/funk/r&b inspired bass lines that are commonly used in rap? If so, then this can lead into JAQUO III-X's thread on "original basslines in hip hop."
