Yep, that's a great one. Also, "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash is just awesome.

I, too, am confused by discounting the Beastie Boys. License to Ill came out in 1984. No, it's not the 70's "original" rappers like Sugarhill Gang, but they are about as "classic" as rap gets.

Man. Bust a Move is still one of my favorite rap bass lines. That song stands the test of time! And I always forget that it was Flea who did it.

That reminds me since Young MC was at the 2006 Nike Run Hit Remix (a fun run where you run from stage to stage and see artists perform). At this year's Remix we had Naughty by Nature, Sugarhill Gang, Sir Mix-A-Lot, and... MC Hammer! It was a "classic hip hop" fiesta, for sure. Naughty by Nature's producer sampled some great bass lines back in the day: "Ghetto Bastard," "Hip Hop Hooray," "Uptown Anthem," "O.P.P.," "Feel Me Flow," the list goes on... Funny how a group that could come up with such catchy party tunes could be so angry at the same time.

He got paid around $200, and that was it...
Poor Flea. I hope he landed on his feet after that...

I wouldn't call it famous, although it was on a soundtrack of a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game, so people have listened to it. Other than that, I guess that Eminem song is famous.
aah, tony hawks pro skater 3 all over again.

I never said that the Beastie Boys weren't Classic. I actually was agreeing with you in my initial post and confirming that by saying that they were around during the same time frame as the artists that I mentioned. Here's a Classic track from them in my opinion but it doesn't include much bass.....

Paul Revere

As for LL Cool J, the tunes you named are cool but here's my fave from him. Again, not much bass....

Rock The Bells

Lost me here as I never disagreed with you.

Check yourself. That quote about The Humpty Dance was not posted by me.

If so, then this can lead into JAQUO III-X's thread on "original basslines in hip hop."
No argument from me here....

I'm really sorry man. I misquoted you when combining the original posts, and misinterpreted olaff421's post as yours because they were next to each other. I actually didn't mean to confront you as it really seems like I'm debating with you specifically even though you didn't say anything opposing what I originally wrote. My beef is mainly with the original poster, who never really explained himself why Beastie Boys wouldn't be considered classic. I went back and edited my post to correct things, but just for the sake of other forum members who are reading this thread, I mixed up ebozzz and olaff421 and wrongly misinterpreted what he was saying in one of his original posts.

And "Rock the Bells" is an awesome song. LL really was unstoppable in his hey day. Nowadays when I hear that "can I hit it somemore" club song it makes me sad, but I guess artists have to reinvent themselves to maintain position in popular music. Madonna is a good example of that.

No worries. You never offended me. I was mainly concerned as I thought there was some misinterpretation of what I had posted. I totally agree with you about the Beastie Boys and their role in the growth/development of Hip-Hop.

Wasn't Doug Wimbish (sp?) the guy who played on White Lines?

I totally forgot LL's "I'm bad" yeah that's a good un

I was thinking the OP is asking about famous sampled basslines, of which MC Hammer is the obvious example.

I actually got a kick out of the chutzpah the beastie boys displayed in their early sampling choices...Zepplin, Beatles, the Meters...nothing was sacred to them.

What was that Zep sample in "She's crafty"?

I'm surprised no one has bit Floyd's "Money" yet...I guess 7/8 is hard to rap over

anyone remember 89's Loc-d After Dark? Every kid in my school had that one. It wasn't until much later though that I realised Cheeba Cheeba had a monster bass groove riff in it. I don't think it's sampled... but it's classic fat funky p-bass.

Otherwise, I'd say anytime Steely Dan gets sampled in hip hop.

The Beastie Boys even worked side-by-side with Run DMC back in the day. They're classic for sure.
