They had one minor hit - You're On My Radio
I just got the remastered CD...pretty cool album, kinda Cars-ish. Solid catchy tunes.

Amazing stuff! "Only" 4 instrumental tracks, but the atmosphere on each of them is beautiful.

I think they only made one album.

This is a completely obscure CD made by a friend of mine in Berkeley, CA in the mid 90's. It was a one-off band he assembled for the recording, where the idea was that...if he could get enough interest going by promoting it through campus radio stations, free promotional give-aways, and just otherwise shopping it around, that only then would the group further rehearse it to perform live. My friend was frustrated by the typical hill that a musician climbs by playing gigs for free (or for a net $ loss) in order to try and get a following. He did this as an experiment to see if there was a different way of "leapfrogging" the glut of upstart bands, and get his music heard. He put a lot of time and money into recording this CD (he was obsessed with drum mic-ing and processing) and even had it mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering in LA (where all the Michael Jackson albums were mastered), which cost him close to 3 grand, alone. It was truly a labor of love for him.
But, his strategy was not successful, and hence this is now practically forgotten. Until a couple of years ago, a Google image search did produce a handful of links with pictures of the CD cover....but no more. Still available used for $0.22 plus $2.98 shipping at the amazon link above. You could do a lot worse by spending $3.20 in this world.
Song titles that I recall (just to give an idea of what a politically incorrect recording this is):
Minister With Tourette's Syndrome
If Jesus was a Homo
Ass-Wipers-R-Us
(Why Do You Waste Your Time) So Completely

| | Hey y'all... watch this! | | Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: Raleigh, NC | | Atlanta mid/late 80's post punk band called "86". Saw them in a little club way back when and was totally blown away. Their best IMHO is an EP called "Minutes In A Day"
You can get to all their music here: Beyond Failure: 86 - Esoteric Champions of Atlanta Postpunk but this particular EP is at: Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire My favorite tracks being Minutes In A Day and Waiting.
Just saying... as far as I know the download is legal.

This album was released in 1994 and can definitely be linked to the music being produced by groups such as Massive Attack and Portishead. Funky beats, dark ambience, sometimes paranoid-type vocals and a mix of programmed and live instrumentation. A very well produced and, despite the links mentioned above, original sounding record. It's one I keep going back to.
Another is "Cash" by Nasty Rox Inc. They were signed to ZTT (Trevor Horn's label) and were perhaps the first rock/funk band to incorporate a DJ. Some really interesting stuff and top-level production (courtesy of Steve Lipson). |
