I'm sure I've left some out, but these lines are IMO essential to the songs. They carry the songs to another level, and in many cases, the songs would not be "great songs" without them. They are commercial, melodic and compositional hooks in their own rights. The main instrumental draw, if you will.

I hope we get some more posts in this thread. Good one!

Ruby Baby(Leiber/Stoller) from Donald Fagen's Nightfly album. Will Lee on Bass.

A track that Rolling Stone, at the time, had the cheek to call "clever filler"!!

Wonder what they think now?

Whenever I test a bass' slap tone, I almost invariably start with the verse of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Aeroplane".

Recently I've gone back to loving Tony Levin's WICKED track on Peter Gabriel's "Slegehammer". Always awesome.

Geddy Lee's playing on Rush's "Leave That Thing Alone" is totally underrated.

Can live double bass solos count? Because then I would be obliged to mention Stanley Clarke's "Touch" (from 1, 2, to the Bass ) and Edgar Meyer's solo track on Music for Two (with Bela Fleck; can't remember the name of the piece, but it's the last track. Absolutely beautiful!).

Pino Palladino's brilliant playing on PAul Young's cover of "Wherever I Lay My Hat" kills me every time

Andy West's obscene chops and groove from the Dreg's unreal "I'm Freaking Out"

the live version of "Continuum" from Jaco's landmark album Invitation

Greg Campbell's lethal intro and line in "hiphopfour"

Anthony Jackson's killer part on Chaka Khan's "Clouds"

Paul Jackson's over-the-top finger funk on Herbie Hancock's "Palm Grease"

Michael Manring's gorgeous work under any ensemble (as well as the stellar "Monkey Businessman")

Gary Willis on Tribal Tech's lovely "No No No"

John Paul Jones on "Hearthbreaker" and the devastating "Lemon Song"

Larry Graham, Jr.'s slap fiesta on "Hair", "Earthquake", "Pow", and "Turn It Out"

Louis Johnson's seismic thump on "Stomp"

Steuart Liebig's "Free Zone" with BLOC

Kim Annette Clarke's unbelievable work on Defunkt's entire album In America

MArk King's entire catalog in the early and mid-80's, particularly "You Can't Blame Louis", "The Pursuit of Accidents", "I Want Eyes" and "True Believers"

Lauraence Cottle with Itchy Fingers and on the soundtrack to the film Liebestraum

Mick Karn on Japan's "Sons of Pioneers", from the album Oil On Canvas, and in his solo career

Percy Jones on absolutely anything

there are more, but I'm a fanatic and you all should have the rest of your day free...

from the lows,

Stew

The live version of "Kiss" has bass, though. I mainly doubled what the keyboards were playing when I played "Kiss" with my fun funk band.
