Yay! First vote

They went downhill after the first album IMO. They were great before they took themselves seriously.

"By The Way" hands down. That is album is much more mature melodically and harmonically than any album that proceeded it, and it's by far their most sophisticated album to date. "Stadium Arcadium" has too many throw away songs to be as tight and concise and "Californication", and specifically “Blood Sugar Sex Majik”, still relied too heavily on the obligatory "freak out" jams in too many songs to distract from their lack of songwriting vision and maturity, which IMO their earlier albums lacked.

I like them all actually. It's great to see a band grow as musicians and as artists. Some may not like to see bands change, but I like to see growth.

S.A.

As much as I like By The Way (2nd fave), the overall record's sound and just the song composition blows me away. Love it again each time I jam it out.

Uplift Mofo! That was THE Red Hot Chili Peppers as they were always meant to be, funk-rock, and it was the original linup. You can tell it was when they were having their most fun from the energy of the album. That's a total party album. You know if you saw that linup doing that album live that it would rock!

Freaky Styley is a very close second!

I don't have the 1st album. Freaky and Uplift, to me are freaking awful!!!!

Mother's Milk Rocks.

BSSM is good but dosen't compare the MM.

One Hot Minute is AWESOME!!!! They should of Kept Navarro and let Fruscante... not re-join the band.

Californication
By The Way
Stadum Arcadium

Yeah.... They shouldn't of let Fruscante re-join the band.

first 4 are excellent! very raw, MM nails chemistry and energy

im a huge RHCP fan and IMO they all are very awesome in their own way

BSSM is excellent, too... very different for them at the time

i must say, too, that One Hot Minute is a very underrated album

like every other band, the newer/younger/more raw, the better.

I totally agree.. Flea is all over this album from raging to sensitive.. This is also the album they only ever devote 3 seconds to on all the documentaries.

haha Blood sugar sex magik, mother's milk freakey stylee and one hot minute i will take with me to my grave. By The Way was such a sellout along with stadium arcadium. Californication was a lighter less funky album that was great without sounding like corporate poppy bastards. Also
Power of Equality
Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Sir Psycho Sexy
Breaking The Girl
Naked in the Rain
Apache Rose peacock
Suck my Kiss
Give it Away
Under the bridge
And the funkiest of the dirty nasty low down scum If You Have To Ask
It's a phenomenal album

Edot: Dave Navarro just was not a part of the chili peppers. I thank him for playing as little as possible on Aeroplane and My Friends, which i think is a beautiful song that an electric guitar solo really didnt fit in. But Dave knew from the first month he wasnt staying, he used to have a list of all the chili peppers guitarists on his picks with a question mark under his name, and if you ever listen to them live from rio and whatnot, listen to dave attempt to play blood sugar sex magik, it just isnt the same as frusciante still on heroin

Another vote for TUMPP

The first three are the best, culminating with Uplift Mofo Part Plan. I remember a house party I threw back in '87 where people were dancing so hard to that CD that I really worried that the old farmhouse I was renting was going to break.

BSSM, to me, marked the start of their long slide into mediocrity, which, unsurprisingly, correlated to their greater commercial success.

Where they lost me was when Anthony Keidis took up more solo singing as opposed to rapping. His singing is not quite as bad as fingernails on a chalkboard, but it's close.

I bought all their records up through One Hot Minute, but I've traded down to the essential first three at this point.
