Every Time You Go Away - Paul Young. I believe it's Pino on bass.

That was Pino.

Even better though IMO were:

Shoot Down the Moon - with Elton John
Give Blood - with Pete Townsend

+1 for "Give Blood"

Other great Pino Palladino lines:
"Stop on By" by Paul Young, featuring Chaka Khan on vocals
"In a New York Minute" by Don Henley (the song itself is a little cheesy, but great work by PP)

+11

That's the one bassline that slapped me in the face and made me take notice of what a fretless can do.

BTW, Bakithi Kumalo has a couple of pages in the latest Bass Player magazine. Good interview.

The "Extra Track/Remastered" version of Graceland has a bass/vocals only draft of "Diamonds On The Soles". PDB.

Track 13-

...worth the 0.99 cents if you already own the album.

Sounds like a Daryl Hall tune, right?

From the same album, The Secret of Association, check out the Octaver/fretless bass on "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down".
PDB, IIRC.

In the same league is "Lady In Red" by Chris De Burgh.
...although, I don't see the Henley tune as cheesy.

Used to be my favorite song back in the day and hadn't heard it in almost 20 years. After listening to it a few weeks ago it completely realigned my brain on what can be done on a fretless. Needless to say I've got a major case of GAS and saving my pennies for a Squier VM F.

I really like 'Mother Stands for Comfort' by Kate Bush.
Think that's Eberhard Weber but not sure...

I always liked that tune and the simple fretless line!

And the Living Colour song "Nothingness". Another simple but cool line.

I don't know if it's my favorite, but I really enjoy the fretless work on the song "Primal" off of Jason Becker's album "Perspective." I think it's Michael Manring.
