Larry Carlton's solo on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne".

Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb
B.B. King - The Thrill is Gone

That's all I can think of at the moment, but I can remember loving solos by Jimmy Page, Wes Montgomery, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many others.

Smile That's a hard one

So many great solos have already been mentioned. I really dig The Reverend Billy Gibbons' solo on the intro of "Thunderbird". Raw, in your face and such tone!
No one has mentioned slide solos so I will. Joe Walsh on "Victim of Love" by the Eagles. Short, sweet and to the point.

Anything by David Gilmour or Tom Morello, two extremes, both awsome.

Zakk Wylde plays guitar like its a string instrument, good guitarist just WAY too much vibrato

but on to the solos subject

Kirk Hammet: Fuel, One, Master of Puppets, Unforgiven, Unforgiven II, Enter Sandman, Orion, ok all of his solos are awesome...(its not a solo, but the melody in Harvester of Sorrow is wicked tight!)

Jimmy Page: all his too

Jimi Hendrix: all of his too

Eugene's Trick Bag- SRV vs. Vai

not guitar but would sound cool on guitar: melody in lightsabre fight in Star Wars: Episode 1

Van Halen- Eruption (yep, the appidime(sp?) of an 80's hair band solo is in that too)

Rivers Cuomo- Say it Ain't so, Dope Nose,Gone Fishin(but unlike Guitar World says, he hasn't "brought back the solo"

Tony Iommi-anything off of Black Sabbath's 1st cd!

Kurt Cobain- Heart Shaped Box(nothing fancy)

Lynryd Skynrd- Freebird

The Who-My Generation(not really a solo, just feedback)

thats all I can think of for now. maybe we should start a thread about coolest intros, or just coolest melodys

"Aqualung" - Jethro Tull (one of Martin Barre's finest moments)
"Blank Frank" - Fripp with Eno
"I Come From The Water" - The Toadies
"Sabre Dance" - Dave Edmunds in Love Sculpture

Jimmy Herring - Lives of Longevity off Mirrors of Embarrassment. The guy is just sick.

Robert Fripp - It's hard to say which one though.

Zappa - Carolina Hardcore Extacy, Inca Roads, Watermellon in Easter Hay. Watermellon is just beautiful.

Billy Gibbons - I think it's La Grange where half his solo is one note, but it's one note played with so much attitude.

Talking

Yeah that 'been caught stealing' solo is cool.....other than that i'd say 'slaves and bulldozers' with Kim Thayil...or Greg Ginns 'process of weeding out'.
