Favorite Jaco Era w/poll

Sign in to disble this ad
What is your favorite era or subset of recordings by Jaco?

For purposes of the poll I have parsed his recordings into the following groups:

Pre Weather Report - Jaco Pastorius (debut solo album), Bright Size Life (Path Metheny), Jaco (Metheny, Ditmas, Bley), All American Alien Boy (Ian Hunter), Land of the Midnight Sun (Al Dimeola)

With Weather Report - Black Market, Heavy Weather, Mr. Gone, 8:30, Night Passage, Weather Report

With Joni Mitchell - Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Mingus, Shadows and Light

As Band Leader - Word of Mouth, Invitation, Twins I & II, The Birthday Concert, Holiday For Pans

Other - Trio of Doom, Herbie Hancock, Mike Stern, Hiram Bullock, Biréli Lagrène, Flora Purim, Brian Melvin, etc.

I have included a category for you haters out there as well...

As much as I love Jaco's pre WR and WR stuff I gotta go with the lyricism and rock solid support of his work with Joni, simply sublime...

Hejira is amazing, so I've gotta go Joni!

It looks like I am not alone in appreciating Jaco's pop side.

With the Trio of Doom he was great, but he really shines with Weather Report imo. I could listen to "Volcano for Hire" all day!

Also, the trio stuff he did with Kenwood Dennard and John Scofield was great.

I have his debut, Heavy Weather, Hejira, and Bright Size Life on my desert island list (8:30 and Shadows and Light are also in the running). I had a very hard time choosing between the first three categories and still find myself changing.

I would have to have Portrait of Tracy and Opus Pocus on my island.

Bright Size Life is in my all-time top 10, and the solo debut is still stunning. I've been playing "Portrait of Tracy" for 15 years and that last harmonic is still only about 50/50...

I voted Joni-era. I love Shadows and Light. Doesn't get much better than that.

A close, but far second would be Bright Sized Life. As much as I love his solo and Weather Report work, it's those two records for me.

I voted as band leader for the album Invitation which is my current favorite. But that's likely to change next week
