Favorite Jazz Trios

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched around a little and didn't find much of a dedicated thread on this, only bits of information here and there. I know there are a lot of great jazz musicians out there--tons, in fact. What I want to know is your all-time favorite jazz trios. Name as many as you want.

For me, especially lately, it's been:

- Chick Corea, John Pattitucci, & Dave Weckl
- Medeski Martin & Wood
- Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, & Tony Williams
- Sonny Rollins, Wilbur Ware, & Elvin Jones

Corea-Patitucci-Weckl?
I guess you can check out the Akoustic Band albums...there's even a recent issue of a DVD, IIRC.
Truthfully, IMO, the BEST the Akoustic Band ever sounded was the time/album recorded with Vinnie Coliauta sitting in for Weckl(Akoustic Band Live @the Tokyo Blue Note). Seriously, for the entire 1st tune("Humpty Dumpty"), it sounds like Corea & Patituuci are holding on for dear life!

Corea has also had other better trios-
Corea-Vitous-Haynes-Now He Sings, Now He Sobs and, for the more adventurous, the same trio's Live In Europe.

Corea-Dave Holland-Barry Altschul-ARC. Basically, Circle minus Anthony Braxton...more Avant Garde than the Akoustic Band.

Corea-Avashai Cohen-Jeff Ballard. A recent trio...still better than the Akoustic Band, IMO.

BTW, if anyone runs into a copy of The Trio(BGO Records/Made In England) by The Trio (John Surman-sax; Barre Phillips-bass; Stu Martin-drums) shoot me a PM.

Perhaps the best Jazz Trio for Acoustic Bass:

Bill Evans
Scott LeFaro
Paul Motain
And nothing wrong with:
Pat Metheny
Charlie Haden
Roy Haynes

I second the "Arc" recommendation.

I happen to really, really enjoy Chick's Akoustic Band stuff. Sometimes Dave Weckl is a little over the top for me but I think John adds so much to it. It was definitely a recording that took a few listens; it isn't "easy listening" jazz. I think their rendition of "Spain" is one of my all-time favorites.

P.S. --
There is just something about a trio that gets me. There is limited freedom: creativity galore but you can't abandon your post because there is no one to back you up. The trios that can do it well, wow, are masters.
