+1 for all of Dave B's choices - but also I'd like to add:

Bela Fleck - Vic - Futch (3 Fly Over the Cuckoo's nest)

Bill Frisell - Paul Motian - Joe Lovano

Metheny - Jaco - Bob Moses

Brad Mehldau Trio - both with Jorge Rossy and Jeff Ballard - and the amazing Larry Grenadier

Oh yeah - must also add:

EST - killing band!

The Oscar Peterson Trio

Doesn't matter if it's with Ray Brown or Niles. Both were insanely great players.

Am I allowed to say John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia?

Don't see why not. A couple of my nominations have no bass player. Good music is good music, no matter what the instrumentation.

Yeah, the 10 DVD box set is what I'm referring to.

It looks like a killer!

IMO, one of the most important "jazz" trios today (though theyre a lot more progressive than some might feel comfortable with calling jazz) is Soulive. Ive seen them a bunch of times (on a cruise around NYC. Best party ever), and I think that if you have good speakers, their best work can be heard here.

If you have very good speakers/headphones, I definitely think its worth it to download the VBR version.

Anyways, its tight stuff. (no bass player, but the keyboardist's left hand is awesome)

How about Oscar Peterson with Ray Brown and NHOP - two great bassists in one trio!?

How about trios lead by bass players - like the Red Mitchell trio!

Like on the album "Talking" with Kenny Barron and Ben Riley - some amazing bass playing!

Any others?
