There's probably more, but right now, I feel that
Filter - Hey man, nice shot
and
Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the name
are pure genius. Now post yours and let's rawk!
By the way, "Hey man..." is a nice finger twister if you play it on a fiver in standard tuning, just try it.

I'm not sure that song qualifies as modern rock or metal though, it's kind of old now. Whatever though, it still rocks. Living Colour has a new cd out this yr but I haven't heard anything from it yet.
I'll add , Murderdolls "love at first fright" to the list. Good motley crue style rock with a little bit of funny/scary shock kind of lyrics. Cool band in general, one of the only modern metal bands I've been able to get into.

BTW & IMO..."Modern" doesn't necessarily = 'being in the present' or 'current'.
To my ears, some '60s Rock sounds "Modern" even by today standards(while some of '00s Rock sounds dated).
"Modern Jazz" is anything post-1940.
