Feedback on new song/album (instrumental prog metal)

Sign in to disble this ad
Our album came out today. We posted a new song on our page. We recorded it with Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, He Is Legend, etc.) in Dec. '06.
Let me know what you guys think.

Super super tight. I really like your tone, it's a bit smoother than I'd think to fit in a metal setting, but it's got a bit of growl, so it works well.

I'm curious, I've always wanted to write prog oriented stuff, not this over the top, a more subdued/repetitious variant of this genre. How does the song writing process go for you guys? I haven't had a chance to ask many proggers this. Every time I come up with a riff that might fit in the genre of PROG, I never know what to do with it. I can't think of a logical way of connecting it to anything.

Great stuff all around

Thanks for the feedback. Jamie coaxed some good tone out of this one...I think I'm shooting for a bit more growl on the next one with maybe a little more cut like you said.
I can't speak for the other guys as much, but for me, I generally think in themes or ideas rather than actual melodies as a starting point. I'm usually not even in front of an instrument when I come up with something. I think of a juxtaposition of rhythms, or intervals, or even items that don't relate to music which I find interesting and would like to find a musical equivalent to whether it be a mathematical principal or a literary concept. I'm very much the type of person who loves to hash out things to the n-th degree on paper over a few days and bring an almost finished song to practice, at least for this type of music, since I don't find prog conducive to jamming (in my case). Then I come up with a melodies and hammer out the concept I'm going for. That's sort of how I do it 90% of the time, but then I can't say I adhere to that formula religiously. I think this genre is pretty well suited for this type of abstraction, though.
Hope that doesn't sound too conceited or drawn out.

Thanks, John!
I think we may. To be honest, the Atlanta scene is not the most encouraging or supportive for this type of music or heavier music in general. I'll drop you a line if we do, though.

We've actually had more luck in Savannah, Statesboro, and Athens...Out of state shows have worked out a lot better, though. Pretty sad.
