I made a youtube of me looping and playing guitar ...then bass... then guitar again. Im trying to get back into playing music but am rusty and could always use peoples thoughts...everything is considered constructive to me so just say whatever you think of about it. I need help pinpointing my weak areas....even if you think the fact that I pick up and instrument at all is my main weakness!

its a ten min. clip so if your up for it I could would appreciate it.

well I loved the video aspect, I liked the green shirt almost matching the green walls

and that you took a drink in between playing not to mention the jack buzz.

all of that was visually cool and different

musically I was left wanting a more groove and a little more separation of guitar and bass lines with more musically relevant lines

its a fun format that you have created

drink from the well

check out the James Jamerson youtube vids

check out some King Crimson for some strange interplay
maybe some Medeski Martin & Wood too, great users of space

and then look into the modes as a means to harmonize the lines when they do collide

First, you are a brave man. Far braver than I.

Nice guitar groove.
The "bass line" isn't. It sounds like a guitar player just playing on a bass. Listen to the guitar groove with your eyes closed and think bass groove. It is going to be entirely different than what the guitar is playing, and will work against that groove, filling in the gaps and providing movement. See what pops into your head.

And, get away from the pentatonic. There are 12 notes to use, and you were using, basically, 5.

Good luck!

lambro-

thanks for the band tips... I have always like MMW but havnt listened to them in a while.

I suppose to be getting some bass tips from Bob Babbitt whenever he has some free
time
but that hasnt panned out yet.

thanks for your honesty as well.
I have never really completed a song before so I guess that was where my head was at....just trying to lock down a groovable groove.. its funny cause Ive never even really played pentatonics before very recently... that interplay is what Im hunting for too!
you guys talked about that ...I didnt realize I was playing off the guitar instead of working against the groove..... good point....improvising on one take doesnt help the choppiness of it either cause im not good enough to pull that off yet everytime.

Im going to practice those points for sure... thanks you guys for taking the time to share with me. I really find it valuble and encouraging just to get a response...so I have something to think about and see in a new way.

if your interested in what I sound like with a "little" more focus on the parts and want to compare some ideas their then check out myspace.com/loopaconway

thanks again...
