I love African music. Have done before I started playing bass, but there is a lot of it in there. Also some pretty good bass in Gogol Bordello, but I see the OP is already familiar with that

I just saw his son Seun Kuti, who is touring with Fela's old band Egypt 80. Amazing show! Surprisingly pretty different from Fela though. Mostly all faster, up-tempo versions of the songs, a more dance-oriented experience, as in "Euro-techno dance beats" tempos and feels. BUT - still it was pure Afrobeat. Fela's recordings are just hard to top.

Also check out Antibalas and Budos Band, Americans carrying the Afrobeat torch, and really good stuff.

And I highly recommend the "Fela!" musical, which crushed on Broadway and has been touring successfully. It's a great testament to the man and his music, and it explains his life's story beautifully.
