First recorded solo piece

Sign in to disble this ad
I finally got some of my music recorded.

It is my first recorded solo piece (see, I really am pretentious) an the first recording of myself since I left my band over a year ago.

http://www.myspace.com/sambeckerantihuman

My phrasing is kind of sloppy, but I just wanted to get something down and the editing and all that jazz is very terrible.

Its solo looping bass so it is very likely that its not your bag (and its seven minutes long, while playing it I would have sworn it was no longer then four), but give it a shot.

Fun Fact: Signal chain is Bass (Geddy Lee Jazz) > Subdecay Quasar (on true bypass the entire song) > Boss BF-3 (used in a fixed position kicking in at 3:25) > Electro-Harmonix 2880 (does all the looping) > 1976 Pioneer SX 650 (My amp was broken so I had to play through an old stereo in my basement) > straigt into interface.

Thanks for your time,
Sam.

All critique is welcome.

No comments , just a question. Is it true that if you decide to play bass in Canada you're just arbitrarily issued a Geddy as standard issue?

I think it sounds very good. I might suggest make the the first ~minute more interesting. It gets much better as time goes on, you start to hear what you're trying to say.

To answer the first question... maybe, but it is likely subconciously drilled into us. I do see quite a few of them around.

And yes I agree, I'm not very happy with the begining, it is rather boring.

I enjoyed the weird quirkiness of March To The Front. Nice tone & phrasing as well. Your tone needs a bit of reverb or Echo or something to round or bring out the warmth/space out a bit on this track. Also it gets a little monotonous towards the end to me.

Flesh & Gold is nice as well.

I think you should use effects to a greater degree on your layers to differentiate the layers of basses more, like Steve Lawson does. You do this a little in Flesh & Gold which I think I like the last half better than Marching To The Front.

Also stay dramatically out of the other basses register as they tend to confuse and blend together sometimes, to me.

Again I liked it but feel you can take it leaps & bounds by doing the above.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the critique, its always helpful. March to The Font has no editing at all, so thats why it sounds kind of dry. I usually kick on a bit of overdrive near the end but I am currently between over-drive pedals.

Thanks again for the help.

On one hand what Lawson does is amazing as it's more musical landscapes than just solo bass playing. A pity he goes as a solo bass player though. I think he could be a lot more popular if he marketed himself as a musician, like Squarepusher does.

I think I actually like some of the awkwardness & spontaneity / weirdness of the first song. I actually think I liked that aspect best, rather than trotting down Tino/Fripp/Eno territory. That part sounded fresh & exciting because you're anticipating if things are going to come together, fall apart or explode into total chaos. I loved that part, the not knowing.
