Talking first song ever fully recorded

Sign in to disble this ad
Hiya,

we have been fiddling around with our pro tools machine in our home studio for way too long. Using it as a place for generating ideas. Now we've finally got our selves around to record a whole song

give it a listen and tell me what you think - it's my first song as a bass player and audio techichian (however that's spelled) to be put on the wide internet.

constructive feedback appriciated

I like the song.

But the recording is extraordinarily ruff.

How did you record it? Live? Individually? Mic'd? Etc.

hey, definitely not my style of music, and im not any good a recording music cleanly or anything, but i do have 2 things to say:

1) good first song
2) lower the singers volume, it overpowers too much IMO

actually it's recorded where we all played while the drums played, then later on deleted all tracks but the drums and then re-recorded bass/guitar and so on... this isn't a finished recording though I know there's gotta be put some more work into it. what I'm asking you dear talkbass members is how much and what - I've listened to this track so many times I guess I've gone blind/deaf - I need fresh ears here

High pass filters are your friend (gets rid of any "mud"), could use some stereo spread, set levels again after the first two.

where would you cut those ? we agree that hi pass filters let high pass right ? meaning cutting lows ? or... sorry really a newbie at these terms

Interesting tune. Liked most of it.
Bass tone seems "muffled". Maybe more mids. Seems to be too much sonic space between the bass and the guitar. I'd shorten the bass intro by half, same with guitar intro.

Alternative intro: reverse the bass intro with the guitar starting.

Vocals seem to need some work. Especially the "harmonies".

The arrangement seems a bit disjointed. Possibly chart it and balance it out a bit.

Lead guitar solo seems to change volume during solos.

The vocals are pretty bassy (I'm guessing he was set up real close to a dynamic mic), as is the guitar. If you cut the lows, they will be out of the sonic space of the bass and drums. After that, I suggest you work on the panning to get the stereo space figured out. At this point I think the song will sound a lot more professional and even if you aren't using the best gear, less rough. Levels are set last.

No problem. Also, once you get the high and low pass filters set where you like, the rest of the EQing will be a lot easier and there won't be very much needed. Feel free to PM.

I think as someone put it-"extrodinarlily ruff" , is a little extreme....
I would say the levels are just kinda "off".

Did the singer do the mixing?

haha no, he's like most other singers, which IME doesn't know any technical stuff. if you even get near terms like low pass or high pass filters, or even EQ he goes

had some time to work on the mix a bit, I've uploaded the new mix to myspace - any comments on the new mix are more than welcome.

http://www.myspace.com/HOSdk/music/s...-73280415?ap=1

it has not yet been through a maximizer - so it's a bit lower than the other one
