First Song - Feedback Requested

Sign in to disble this ad
Title says it all. This is our first song as a band and we're wanting honest feedback from people who actually know stuff about music. Honest, yet not cruel and degrading please.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08BfN_nkuUM

For those of you who do like it, I say thank you, and please vote for us here -> http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/p...8178440&ref=ts and vote for Purple Silence.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Edit: also, sorry for the annoying little kid during the breakdown before the solo... our drummer's little brother's friend wouldn't let us be the entire time we were trying to do this.

The riffs are pretty cool. Vocals are kind of hard to understand but thats probably just recording quality. I do think I heard the guitars go out of time. Eitherway for a first song it's pretty good.

I like it! The recording quality it's not so good, so I guess I would have to wait until the finished demo to make more comments, but:

a) If I were you, I would consider boosting the mids and treble during the bridge/pre-chorus part that starts at 0:50. The bassline for that part is quite different from the rest of the song (it's also my favourite part of the bassline), and I think it could be better heard this way.

b) Also double check that part to see if there's any clashing between your line and the singer's melody. You could also try to fill in more in the spaces where he's not singing. That, and the boosted mid/trebles, should make your bass shine

Of course, feel free to ignore anything I said above That's just my personal opinion.

Thanks you two. We recorded thru Audacity and synced it together with a drum recording. It was the best we could do without paying someone to use their gear. I wasn't there when the vocals, but i'm pretty sure they ended up putting a Rock Band mic straight into the USB port... so we'll get that done correctly sometime in the future. Any other tips for self recording would also be appreciated.

Cool tune, the recording sounded a little funky on my cpu speakers, and I couldn't really hear the bass. My only constructive critisizms would be:
1. If you guys are recording it to video, have a lot more fun! You guys look kinda bored when you are playing up there.

2. Kind of the same thing with your singer. He sounds a little bored while singing, he should put a lot more emotion into his vocals. Especially for your type of music, it won't hurt if he lets his inner wild man run free.

3. I like your lead guitarist, the solo didn't seem to resolve smoothly at the end, but overall, very good on his part. He just needs some more stage mojo as well.

Hope I didn't come across harsh, just trying to sincerley help.

Didn't come across as harsh at all. If it did, i asked for it by honest feedback. Stage presence is one thing that we know we need to work on.

Seriously, I thought the baby was part of the song... it tripped me out.

Maybe I need to take a second listen but I actually thought it was cool. Just FYI

Haha, that kid would not let us be while we were trying to get this. It's like that everytime we're over there to practice if he's there.

The song is solid, I'd invest in doing some better recording. You can get a setup capable of recording a decent demo for a couple hundred bucks.

Overall I think it's a pretty cool song, especially for a first effort! I'm having a hard time picking up your bass line, but I've only got crappy CPU speakers here at work.

The one thing I would say for sure is, you have to get a better mic! You mentioned that the vox were done through a Rock Band mic?? I'm not sure what your money situation is, but at a minimum you should look into scanning craig's list and finding a better mic than that.

Also, just a pet peeve but I'd kick that music stand to the side in a heartbeat! Y'all wrote this song! You gots to know it and love it! Plus it's just so not rock n roll!

Now, positives! I dig the sound, it reminds me of Wolfmother meets The Hives. Your lead guitarist has some chops and the rhythm section is pretty tight and I like the song structure as well!

here's my suggestion.. turn off all the heavy distortion and use more of an overdriven sound...keep the effects.. and you will have a much more ear-friendly tune that will appeal to a larger age group..

Sounds like a really cool early 70's psychedelic rock.. which is cool..

sounds good though... I just don't think the style needs all that heavy distortion...

As far as the mic goes, they ended up using that because the one chord that we were using for a real, actual mic, broke, and that was the only thing we had around. Better recordings will be made when we have more stuff to record.

As far as the music stand tho, the singer had just re-wrote some of the lyrics, and couldn't remember them for some reason, so we did what we could.

Anymore people?
