First time in the studio with a producer

So I flew up Wednesday night to Seattle. 9:00 Thursday morning we had packed into a small car and headed for the studio... When we arrived that morning it was my turn to burn, the drum tracks were done and I had a scratch guitar/vocal track to vibe to. So as I opened the case and slowly brought out a six string Roscoe skb with a flame maple top the producer got a funny look on his face. He then brought up the first track which has a slower but very intense vibe. He looked at me and said " this track is kinda simple and I want it real' chill ya know? And I think with a six string bass you might tend to play too many notes, or feel that maybe more is needed..." I smiled and said "ok". We started the track and I play only root notes on this one... He looked at me and asked "is that all you play?! That's not what I expected at all!" ( I thought " dude, did you even listen to the demo we sent?!) I dropped the track in one take... We then went back to add more rythmic and harmonic content when the line was too simple for some parts... I have to admit that I almost felt insulted at what he said. But at the same time I see where he was coming from. We realized where each of us came from and the rest of the tracks we had a lot of fun with! At one point we were looking for a different tone and I joked that I needed a producer switch that when flipped did absolutely nothing but the producer goes "that's it! thats the tone!" and at the track before I was having a hard time with some syncopations and he jokes "I need a bass player who can count!" overall it ended up being a great experience and these tracks are groovin'!
