Focus blast through the cheese barrier to a different level. They are awesome. I love Thijs van Leer - he's one of the most heartful musicians I think.

Have you ever seen that video where thijs is like 'our music is evolution'. It's brilliant. Then jan akkerman makes some sarcy comment to thijs. But I was like 'thijs is so much cooler than you'. Plus jan akkerman has nasty teeth.

Thijs is the man.

I saw those guys on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. They rocked then, the tune rocks now. The band is good.

I bought the album when it came out, still have it. The studio version had a somewhat different feel to it, a little less bonkers. Great tune......great band.

Are you sure? That was my first thought, too; but in '73, Oprah would have been 19 and working in Nashville (yes, I googled...for Oprah. ).

I found one comment about this vid on another site that says it's Gladys Knight.

*EDIT*
Yeah... Gladys Knight, not Oprah.
Here's another of the same video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_BWSGTrzUo
The video's poster says it's Gladys. I know that doesn't prove anything, but check out pics/videos of GK from 1973. That's her.

Ah ha...

The clip is from an episode of The Midnight Special.

Season 2, episode 4. Host was Gladys Knight.

Mystery solved. No one has to feel dirty about being attracted to a young Oprah. It ain't her.

Way back in 1978 my college roommate turned me on to a Focus live album that was just stunning. Jan Akkerman is a fascinatingly good guitarist, he's like the bastard offspring of Terje Rypdal and Bill Connors.

Very astute analysis, Hoov.

I recall Focus, too, from one of those late night Music Shows...I was thinking In Concert (aired a bit earlier than Rock Concert & The Midnight Special).

Wow. This kicked my butt back in the day - totally unlike anything else you EVER heard on the radio.
At this tempo, and with these expressions (and some of the clams in the intro) I can only speculate as to what combination of substances was involved.

Never knew that was Jan Akkerman on guitar.

Cool version of "Hocus Pocus"...jazzier with an obvious nod to early Tull-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnTGF...eature=related

Great quality considering it was the early '70s.
...van Leer is a monster.

Ah, before music was so polarized and rock bands were able to stretch a little.
