Folk Metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there such a thing? I know of some stoner bands that have folk elements, but these groups are more roock than metal.

I'm looking for like a hybrid of Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention with like......Celtic Frost or Boris or Mastodon or something......

Any suggestions?

HA! I bet you thought you wouldn't get a reply. Don't ask me WHY I know the answer..but here it is...

a band called Korpiklanni

Just put Korpiklaani in the search at YouTube and go nuts! Check out the songs "Beer Beer", "Wooden Pints", "Happy Little Boozer", and many more. I hope this is just what your lookin for!

Also go to korpiklaani.com and go to the discography section and there are mp3 samples of songs on the records.

FINTROLL!!

They are from Finland, and they are trolls. Seriously. It's like a metal version of Floggy Molly, in finnish.

Korpiklaani? Did you check them out?

EDIT: HAHA. I waited 5 minutes before posting this, and walked in the other room. When I posted, both my answers were given.

Agalloch

Hard to classify this band, but they're awesome. Their newest album "Ashes Against the Grain" is great. They combine Dark, doomy metal with folk elements. Definitely worth checking out.

Finntroll are great.

Agalloch... okay I'm getting the chills just typing their name. They are THAT good. Incredible band, can't say enough amazing things.

Tenhi are great, but are mostly folk.

Ulver did one folk/metal album (Bergtatt), and one folk album (Kveldssanger). Great stuff!

Oh yes, and the grandaddy, yes, better than even Agalloch:

EMPYRIUM

Absolutely mindblowing! They released four albums, broke up, did some other crap, and I think now they are working on a 5th.

Mandatory album! One of the most amazing feats in musical history! GO BUY THIS!!!

Or PM me for some mp3s, whatever.

Another one for finntroll! They really do kick ass when it comes to this kind of music, and their new album is out soon. Also, Ensiferum are very good. My two recomendations.

Oh yeah, definatly, though i would atleast not call Vintersorg folk metal really, i have only heard a single song from otyg though.. Maybe the early stuff (which was more viking metal in my opinion), but its become more progressive and progressive, and the folk metal elements are all gone nowadays, still, check Vintersorg out. Its truly unique music!

When we say folk in Europe it could refer to Viking/folk Metal...

So, Fintroll, Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Turisas (kinda) and probably the ''trend'' setters Bathory there are probably loads more but thats all i can think of atm

A lot of what was named was more ambient/post-metal. If that satiates your craving for "folky" metal, then check out Mouth of the Architect, Pelican, Isis, Kenoma, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Jesu, Windmills By The Ocean...

Dude, been there, and listened to all of those. I own everything all of those have done except WMBTO and Kenoma.
I've seen Pelican twice and Isis twice. Those guys are no news to me. I am the master of ambient and post metal!

BTW, Fintroll rules.

Hillbilly Orchestra...I think they're on Vinnie Paul's label and also along those lines is one of Dime's projects Rebel Meets Rebel. I think that one's pretty badass!

o O...i heard someone say ulver...i dig their stuff...does arcturus count? they were hellhammer, a couple of guys from ulver, another band i can't think of, and now they've got simen haestnas (vortex) with them...

no one has mentioned eluveitie yet...these guys are straight folk metal with all of the traditional instruments and everything...plus, their bassist, rafi kirder uses a lefay herr schwarz 5 like mine (but he's endorsed by reiner, so...)
