'Footprints' - Fretless Video

Sign in to disble this ad
Just wanted to record and share something solo-ish and jazzy - so I thought this would be a cool - the old Wayne Shorter tune - Footprints.

I hope you dig some of it - sorry for the odd bum note.

Mike

hey some real nice playing - good ideas and rhythmic melody. Maybe on the next take use more of the bass as the same section starts to loose its unique personality.[like the head the first time down low e..g.] I like the use of the thumb near the end - nice technique. Keep up the interesting work!

Hey Mike

That really sounds bitchin. The fast stuff and out stuff is killing (REALLY KILLING!), but some of the longer notes leave me wishing for hipper note choices. Have you ever tried singing with your playing? I find I play alot more musically when I'm doing that. I think it sounds great though.

Here's a footprints thing I did a few weeks back...much different concept!

Hi Wilby,

Thanks for the constructive criticism - I love your version as well - great tone on the electric and lovely playing all round - cool!

I agree with your comments - this was a very much 'jam' - I did a three-bass version of 'Little Sunflower' mainly inspired by Christian McBride's version of it - listen to it here http://www.myspace.com/flynnbass - and I think you'll agree that it's much more of a 'composed' solo - I guess I should try that approach more often. I do sing with my lines but as this was a little homevideo thing you'd hear me singing all over it - which you wouldn't if I had done the audio seperately - but I agree it makes for some very tuneful playing. I do sing my lines live - even my basslines (if it's a tough tune) - so it's something I'll try and bring in more often in the future.

Thanks as well

M

Cool

Hey Mike, I couldn't tell...are you using three fingers? Your attack is just great (very even) but it's so quick that I assume you must be using three or four.

Sometimes I hear myself singing live (recorded) and it just sounds like Oscar Peterson (moaning, bad!) but I still think it helps me center my ideas.

It has really been cool to hear you progress over the last year, big time props to you.

Hey Wil - I just pick with two fingers - but I rake when decending and I am working on bringing in some legato stuff too - whatever gets that 'slippery' vibe going on! The stuff at the very end is the old Garrison 4 finger stuff - just going super fast and hoping to play something musical... - I will also say that the one thing that annoys me about my singing and playing unison is that my voice sucks!

Thanks man

Thats really amazing and pretty. The bass sounded so sweet. What kind of strings were you using?

I use Elites - I think they might be made by the same people as DWs - I get mine from www.stringbusters.co.uk - mine are the very lightest gauge of the Players series - 30 - 90 - yeah I know they are super light - but the ebony fingerboard on this bass kicks out the tone...

Thanks

Mike

well, I guess I'll have to start singing along with my playing. It seems like you've had some good results with it.

Great technique, but a few too many notes, and kinda "in." Still very good.

Thanks mate - I agree this is definitely a bit too noodly - I'm just working up to some decent new 'studio' recordings - I'll be more tasteful in those.

Cheers man

Mike
