This song makes me want to play a fretless bass.

I have never played fretless much at all but that is some nice fretless playing.

I started playing fretless because I wanted to be more versatile. And have that freaking awesome "mwah" thing going on.

For me it was Freebo on Bonnie Raitt's early albums. "Too Long At The Fair" and "Love Has No Pride" STILL get to me...

This is a great version of "Love Has No Pride" with just Bonnie & Freebo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbqXMQCq59U

This is a good version of "Too Long At The Fair"... well, it's a really good version except Freebo's bass isn't recorded as well, so I suggest you get the album.

I started with a fretless instrument..the Cello. But the first song to make me want to play a fretless bass was The Philosopher, by Death.

That was great!
This is the one that did it for me in 1971.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ02i8elJu8
It would be David on bass
Not the greatest all time fretless playing but in 71 was cool.

Hey JTE you notice Freebo tuned the fretless during the tune? Puts a lot of myths to rest huh? It does matter, in spite of what the guitarist says.

I learned vibrato in orchestra. Problem is the technique doesn't work with a fretted bass. Plus the glissinado and tone would be great.

My greatest compliments have been when someone hears me play fretless and thinks I'm on a fretted bass. Then I know I'm nailing the intonation and not drifting into too many slurs and glissandos.

This song wouldn't have been the same with fretted bass

Carvin. So much for that "Carvins all sound so 'sterile'" myth!
