is that a fretless bass i hear on grank funk railroad songs!?

i was listening these awesome songs like inside out, closer to home, heartbreaker, time machine and i was wondering how do you get this awesome kind of a fat(ish) tone and then it occurred to me maybe its a fretless bass! duh!
so really it is fretless hmm?? nice ass kicking bass lines in there! i think am going to learn a couple of there tunes

That would be interesting if true, I usually see pictures of Mel with his Darkstar-loaded (fretted) Jazz from that period.

I believe he used Gibson Mud-buckers in his Jazz basses.

Nope,the man never played a fretless. A P-bass or Jazz bass with flats was always the weapon of choice. Lots of tube overdrive was a big part of his sound.

Flats solved my lack of fat problem. Now if only I could do something about this cholesterol...
