Question Fretless Bass used for "Nightshift" Commodores?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do you guys know what kind of bass/combo the bassist used on the Commodores' "Night Shift" tune? In the video the guy is playing a Steinberger fretted looking thing..but dang I dig that particular sound. Thanks

I wonder if it's not a keyboard.

I always thought it was a keyboard as well.

I also think that is a keyboard. The attack just doesn't sound natural enough to be a fretless IMO.

It is a keyboard. The Steinie in the video is just for show. Try to practice along to this tune - it really forces you to play cleanly and with a very even, controlled kind of sustain.

Like maconbass said, the attack just isnt right, especially at the beginning.

It is possible that he is playing a fretless bass with some kind of filter on it.

In the 80's there were a few convincing fretless keyboard sounds, Thomas Dolby, Thompson Twins, Alana Miles Black Velvet etc. to name a few.
