Well I was sat home this Saturday and was totally shocked when i turned on BBC2's The Culture Show to see Tom Jenkinson a.k.a. Squarepusher being interviewed but then even more pleasantly surprised to see and hear him play a three minute, entirely solo bass piece at the end that was a kind of slap flamenco / classical jazz thing - it was pretty wicked - and bear in mind this was on at prime time Saturday night TV time - all I can say is "more solo bass on BBC tv please..."
Anyway - here's a page on the BBc2 website with good quality full-length streams of his new album for you to sample: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/collective/A16095170
Cheers

keep em coming. | No problem - I'm just doing my job - I'll keep you posted on anything else that makes the funky-grade - if you like Squarepusher I suggest you by Feed Me Weird Things and Hard Normal Daddy for some serious jazzy-drum-and-bass - his last album (can't remember the name) is also really good.
Keep listening.

It looks like they are releasing it on DVD - there's a sample here uploaded by Warp records - the bass playing on this gig was amazing - mainly on his 6-string bass - he's on his Fender-style Jazz here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLcxve603-4
There was a very interesting start to the gig that I really hope makes the DVD too - it was basically a 20 minute set of free jazz with a sax player and drummer - really wild stuff - in fornt of 2000 people, then he went all drum and bass! He double thumbs like a badaassss - Squarepusher rocks!

Hi Mike,
I normally need to have my attention grabbed within the first 30 seconds of a passage of music, whatever it is and with this selection of samples I got bored.Perhaps the bass playing came in very much later? |

This usually involves some tracks that are extremely bass-heavy - as in they feature some very intricate bass parts right through the track - but on other tunes it could be out and out electronica, ambient soundscapes, dirty drum and bass or even some classical guitar and six string bass on a delicate ballad - it's all about contrasts with SP - but there's also some very f***ed up stuff as well that even I don't really like. If you give it a chance and you might find yourself really digging it.
The two albums everyone recommends for a starting point ar Hard Normal Daddy and Feed Me Weird Things, his one from a year ago Ultravisitor is also very good. Give it a try - I think you'll get into it - but like all 'good' music - it sometimes takes a couple of plays to really get into it.
Cheers
Mike
