As fun as Sir Duke?

Sign in to disble this ad
Howdy.

Long time listener, first time caller.

After listening to it for 100 years I finally sat down yesterday and spent twenty minutes to learn Sir Duke.

What fun to play. I was bobbing my head like a teenager again.

What songs immediately come to mind that are as much fun to play as Sir Duke?

Here are some of mine:

Jackson 5: ABC-123
James Brown: Funky President
Jamiroquai: Whatever It Is, I Just Can't Stop (can get repetitive though...)

Which of your favorite tunes are as much fun to play as Sir Duke?

Need some ideas. Thanks.

I keep meaning to learn Sir Duke... That horn run sounds fun...

Odd that my current fav song to play is also a Stevie song - "I wish" - - what fun that is!

Here's a great one,
Stevie Wonder - Do I Do, with a fun bassline and unison line.
Then learn Donnie Hathaway - This Christmas

Good stuff!

I wish... Fun Song. How about Brick House? Shake a Tail Feather, Down to the Nightclub, Shakey Ground. I play those every gig. Makes me glad I play bass. Ahhh life is good.

There was just the whole transcription to that in BP this month. I am about halfway through. It kicks major butt.

I was lucky it was easy for me to pick up... I guess it's burned into my subconscious after all these years.

Go for it... it's not as hard as you think.

And that F - G# - C in the chorus just makes me smile every time it comes around. So counterintuitive, but sounds so good.

Sir Duke was a blast! I always got a grin from playing 'This Time it's Real' by Tower of Power and 'Peg' Steely Dan

Hadn't thought about Peg... that sounds like fun.

Here's another...

Brother's Johnson: Stomp!

Keep 'em coming. I think I need to join a project where I can get my 70's funk/disco on.

I love playing "What's Going On....a classic Jamerson line. Shining Star is a good time, September is fun to mess around with, but "I Wish" and "Do I Do" are a REALLY good time. Nate Watts wrote the most fun bass lines. Listen to "Funkin For Jamaica" sometime too.

"Forget Me Nots" by Patrice Rushen is fun (and can be a challenge to play cleanly).
"Joyous" by Pleasure
"Just A Touch Of Love" by Slave
"Square Biz" by Teena Marie
"In The Stone" by Earth, Wind & Fire
"Space Cowboy" by Jamiroquai
"Master Blaster" and "As If You Read My Mind" by Stevie
"Give The People What They Want" by The O'Jays

+1 as long as it is the album version with Mr. X's bassline.

Another one from Jamiroquai is "Just Another Story".

I'm assuming you mean the album version as opposed to the single version (both are "studio versions"). I think they're both good but I do prefer Mr. X's album take.

I would say The Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love. Simple but effective. Also, it is hypnotic, and straight out funky.

Simple but what a groove - Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder.

"Don't wan't you no more"/"Not my Cross to bear" from The Allman Brothers Band's first album. While Not my cross to bear is basic blues, Don't want you no more is a tour de force of southern blues rock.

Nathan Watts is a monster player and of course Stevie Wonder's left hand is one of the best bassplayers in the biz!

Other fun songs to play;

Chameleon - Paul Jackson (Headhunters)
Green Earrings & FM - Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan)
Sinister Minister - Victor Wooton (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones)
Makin' Flippy Floppy & Swamp - Tina Weymouth (The Talking Heads)
Cisco Kid & Low Rider - B.B. Dickerson (War)
Cissy Strut - George Porter Jr. (The Meters)
Thorazine Shuffle - Allen Woody (Govt Mule)
