Funk + Country = Funktry?

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me say first that until recently I had never actually listened to country. I cracked jokes about it but I never sat down and gave it a worthwhile listen until I saw The Bridge, at a local music fest. Their songs "Shake 'em Down and Bad Locomotive perfectly illustrate the Funktry sound I dig so much. They blew me away! Soon enough I was screamin' and cheerin' with the rest of the crowd.

I want to find more country bands to listen, even if they don't have that funk element to them. I think that this stuff is definitely worth a listen or two but I have no idea where to start and something tells me that I could find better than the offerings of GAC and CMT (not that they're all bad).

Oh, and anything with chicken pickin', I want, lol. I've only heard it here and there but for some reason I think it's the coolest thing ever.

I looked at the 2 vids in the link...I'm not hearing really anything "Country" about either (caveat: I did not watch the entire video).

Some of the audio links...maybe (I guess a fiddle gives it a vibe).
Anyway, some of those links remind me a little of Mark O'Connor's albums...such as The New Nashville Cats & Heroes. Check out "New Country" from the latter.

There's also Keith Horne's 'funky/Country' band, Hot Apple Pie.

Some early Flecktone stuff (w/ Howard Levy) could be funky/Country/Bluegrass.
Same, too, for early Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit (w/ Matt Mundy's mandolin).

Check out JJ Cale, in particular a song called "My Gal".
Also, not so much of the funk, but if you're into pickin check out Chet Atkins.
