I'm not sure how I am supposed to understand that question?
I came to this thread with an opinion that was based on me not having heard any intersting funk that was made in the past 20 or so years. I also stated that I am more than open to hear something that makes my opinion obsolete. I am looking for funk that is new and current and the fact that I have not heard any relates directly to the original intention of this thread. Jauqo, you and several others that have posted here are members who I respect and who have a much deeper knowledge of the funk than I have. I was hoping to be pointed towards, well, something. My original post seems to have irked DWBass, though, and things went downhill from there. I have nothing to teach, I want to learn. Specifically of new-school funk. That's all.

Now I do like, listening to other genres. Drastically different. When I sling the bass on though, Im only playing funk. Not r+b. Not soul. Not dance/pop. Funk
I dont listen to many funk albums, I just make up my own funk. Get all hot, sweaty, and funky. Its fun.
Just did 3 hrs of making up funky bass lines. Had a blast |

One thing about life, is its allways changing. You just have to adjust to the changes.
If you dont, you'll be miserable.
You cant get stuck in the good ole days of yester year. Things are constantly changing |

If you don't investigate and do a little history homework, ( yes, in this world of VH1 quick cuts and I want it yesterday mentality) the only way to make it "Sound Today", but with the groooooove, atitude, a BAND breathing, sweatin', letting the music breath, listening, sweatin' and being ON THE ONE, it's just elevator, jack-booted, thumbing with a fake skanking guitar and a drummer to bored to lay it down for 5-10 minutes (we know you got chops, play for the song), and ONLY THEN, will it be relevent TODAY! Marcus Miller made many trips to Staton Island from Queens (2-3 hour transit one way) to meet with an "Older Cat" named Kenny Washington, to learn the HISTORY of Jazz! To learn the language of this art form to take it to another level. THAT'S how you make something relevant today!

It will recognize you before you recognize yourself. It can be discussed but its not hangin' around. There's too much rump to be shaken for the task to be forsaken.

To a large degree unspoiled by technology and still uses old school funk and a tight pocket as its base. Example, Fred Hammonds new CD "Free to Worship" is totally off the hook. Not trying to proselytize, just expand the discussion. Funk is long from being dead.
Also Check out:
Israel Houghton and New Breed
Lamar Campbell "When I think about You"
Tye Tribett and G.A.
Kirk Franklin "Hero"
Hezekiah Walker "20/85 the Experience"
J. Moss
On another note, Rhonda Smith (Ex Prince Bassist, CD "RS2") is pretty funky. |
