This thread had me thinking (lamenting) the death of funk, so I've been researching. I think I've found current funk bands that live up to original funk without being copycats.

Buddy Hank Band - Funkin' in the Ghetto
Christina Fasano - Spiritually Wet
Dig This - In Pursuit of Violet Jones
The Dixons - For You
Earthworm! - Snap Station & March to the Witch's Castle
Harambe - Roots (I like this band a lot)
Here Come the Mummies - Terrifying Funk From Beyond the Grave
Hope Clayburn's 2nd Booty Battalion - Report for Booty
Hotrod Otis - Evolve
Jerome Edmonson - Free to be Me
Jive Train - Jive Train
Mingo Fishtrap - From the Private Bag & Succotash
Next Page - Next Page
The Poets of Rhythm - What Goes 'Round & Discern/Define
Sonnyboy - Love Child & Urban Misfit
Soul City Survivors - Second Soul
Starcandy - Set it Off & Up Close
Theryl 'Houseman' De'Clouet - The Houseman Cometh
Gran Torino - One & Two
TrippHorn Solution - Funktionslust
The Yards - The Yards

And if you like Funk Rock:
Afroskull - Monster for the Masses

Hope you find these to satisfy your Funk craving!

I didnt go through all 4 pages of posts, but in case someone didnt say it before me, check out Soulive

www.soulive.com

They have a lot of funky tunes. And if I have anything to say about it, Funk will never die

Prince - new album is him back to his old self - his bass playing is brilliant and to my ears still sounding very original.

And lastly

FISHBONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are awesome - and Norwood Fisher is in my top five of bassists who were a huge influence on me when I was starting out - what a great, great groove player.
I guess I did get beat to the punch on that one. If your interested in some Soulive with Reggie Recordings from a live show, Id be glad to share them.

PS - Reggie Watts is the singer for Maktub, mentioned previously, mixes great with Soulive's groove.

for the guy who started this thread and everybody else who might read this, go and pick up "illoominutty" by Weapon of Choice. you all will thank me. this music is out there. way out. you haven't heard funk like this since early funkadelic or sly and the family stone. after illoominutty sinks in get one of their erlier records, "highperspice."
its worth it for the first song alone, "the n word." n word up.
