You must buy "Donny Hathaway Live" (recorded at the Bottom Line and the Bitter end featuring Willie Weeks on Bass) and his album Everything is Everything (paul Satterfield).

I also agree that anything Motown is great (pre-LA)
Stax/Volt
Some of the old Atlantic R&B is great (Wilson Pickett, Aretha...)

Another one I REALLY liked was Galactic. I got myself "Coolin' Off". I'm enjoying it right now.

Should check out Garage a Trois as well if you dug Galactic, same drummer (Stanton Moore) and 8-String guitar player (Charlie Hunter). Also the Charlie Hunter Trio is really good as well.

Might also check out Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet.
