Hi All
I play in a classic rock band at the moment. I would like to find some classic Funky Rock tunes that we might put into our set.
I'm not a big funk player but would like some idea of who or what songs I could check out.
This is the kind of thing I had in mind
Funk #49 the James Gang
Play that funky Music Wild Cherry
Long Train Running The Doobie Brothers
Thanks for your help

Toto has a lot of funky stuff, too much to list really, check some of the early albums.
Steely Dan can get quite funky, listen to Hey Ninteen for example. Josie is a good one too.
I would also recomend the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the best funk rock band in my book. |

Especially the breakdown section near the end. |

| | | | Moving ahead a bit in time, you might want to check out some Robert Palmer. Early on he did "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley" (on which he was actually backed by the Meters); later, he did great stuff like "Every Kinda People", "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" and his cover of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me."
Also (continuing the English soul crooner idea), you have Bowie, during his "Fame" period). |

Try Maggotbrain, it's more trippy funk-rock. |

| | | | Here's an offbeat one, but worth a listen:
"Peace Frog" ~ The Doors
Also, "Willy & the Poor Boys" ~ Creedence Clearwater Revival
These are '60s songs that obviously predate real '70s funk, but they can be given the funk-rock treatment very well. |

Funk #49 By Joe Walsh\The James Gang is a good starting place for me.

Man this is a band playing Gary Moore/Thunder/Faces/Def leppard/The Black Crows etc. (Fret w@nk!ng guitarist)
They must be some songs that Rock & Funk out there.
I did want to do one called "Get The Funk Out" by Extreme but the guitarist is not what you would call "Nuno Bettencourt" LOL
So I need Rocky Funk.
Thanks

Trampled Under Foot - Led Zeppelin
Peace Frog - The Doors
These are fairly funky songs. The Meters are more funk than rock but they definitely rock and it would fit with your stuff. People that don't know music very well often think these songs are our own songs. That's a plus too... it means they're not overplayed. |

| | | | I sense that you're looking for long-haired (dare I say "white") guitar players.
Perhaps some Aerosmith?
"Walk This Way"
"Rag Doll"
and more... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
