I already know a bit about Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.

But does anyone know any other bands or songs/albums I should listen to?

Any particular ones with good bass lines?

Well... Weather Report for sure. I also like some of Bill Bruford's solo stuff, check out One of a Kind, featuring Jeff Berlin. Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life is stellar, and you gotta get some Herbie in the mix too - check out Headhunters and Thrust....

For newer stuff, can't go wrong with Front Page featuring Dominique DiPiazza and Dennis Chambers, I really love The Idiot King by Attention Deficit w/ Michael Manring....

DEFINITELY get some Gary Willis going - he's the man! Check out Tribal Tech's albums Illicit, Face First and Reality Check, as well as his solo album Bent. Here's an old video, check out the colors, hat design, and bass, hehe..

Allan Holdsworth (Velvet Darkness, IOU, Metal Fatigue, ...) and Frank Zappa (Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, Grand Wazoo, Make a Jazz Noise Here, Best Band You Never Heard, ...). All of these albums have tasty bass lines.

You gotta check out THRUST by Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters too. Paul Jackson Mike Clark are tearing it up on that one!

Weather report are considered to be the best fusion band, and there is no shortage of great bass lines with Pastorious on bass. I recommend Heavy Weather and/or Black Market. Also, check out John Mclaughlin (he formed Mahavishnu orchestra), his Electric Guitarist album is my favorite fusion album. Pat Methany has some cool fusion stuff to, check out Bright Size Life. Oh and Herbie Hancock. He's an incredibly famous jazz pianist who turned to fusion in the 70's. Made some great stuff...

Jean Luc Ponty:
"Live" and "Enigmatic Ocean" both with Ralphe Armstrong on bass. On "Enigmatic Ocean" you also get some Holdsworth guitar soloing.
Also check out Chick Corea's Elektric band with John Patitucci, and the seminal "Bitches Brew" with Dave Holland and Harvey Brooks on bass.

Just a side question, but does anyone know a website or book where i can learn the basslines? (I've played piano for a couple years, so i'm good in treble cleff) Or should i just learn to play by ear?
