Fusion "Standards"?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm just getting into fusion, and am looking for more to listen to and play. I've listened a lot to Casiopea and SMV, but am pretty uninformed about classic fusion.

What would you recommend as "Standards" of fusion?

For example, I see Corea's "Spain" and "Got a Match?" a lot, as well as Weather Report's "Birdland". Any other songs a lot of fusion groups play that I can cut my teeth on?

I'm not looking for "Listen to these guys" types of responses, as I have a lot on my plate already, more "Play along to this song" kinds of responses.

I'm thinking the best way to get better at fusion would be to learn some licks by transcribing.

Fusion is not really well defined (there's jazz-rock, jazz-funk, etc.), but I don't think anyone would argue with these (some are "standards"):

Bright Size Life - Pat Metheney
La Fiesta - Chick Corea
Phase Dance - Pat Metheney
Red Clay - Freddie Hubbard
Oye Como Va - Tito Puente
Barbary Coast - Weather Report
Black Market - Weather Report

I'd check out any Chick Corea stuff with John Patitucci. Also the later Miles Davis stuff with Marcus Miller. If Miles Davis isn't "standard", I don't know who is!

Also anything with Jaco Pastorius on his solo albums could qualify, but stick with songs with more vocals in them from the "Jaco Pastorius" solo album.

Chuck Sher's 'New Real Books' have some fusion standards in them.
