Lightbulb GarageBand Covers

I'm a new bass player and have been teaching myself how to play by playing along to various tracks from iTunes. I've got my bass plugged into a PX4D and the aux connected to the headphone jack on my MacBook, and I play along. It's been a great way to jam, but I was thinking it would be fun to be able to turn off the bass tracks on the original songs and see how I do "on my own." That got me to thinking that there must be a repository somewhere of downloadable GarageBand files of various covers where different people have contributed. For example, someone starts with the bass line on Comfortably Numb and uploads the file, then a drummer downloads it and adds in his drum track, a guitarist does his work, etc. Eventually you'd have a collection of music where you could turn tracks on and off and play along. If the music isn't being sold, I'd think that there shouldn't be any copyright issues (although IANAL).

Has anyone seen anything like this? Does anyone else think it's a good idea?

A lot of normal tab sites are being forced to remove tabalatures due to legal issues. I'm almost certain this would fall under the "not legal" category.

Check out Guitar Pro. It sounds like what you want. It isnt a recording, it has midi tracks. You can turn tracks on/off, edit them.

And if you want to learn a song it has tab/notation there. You hit play and play along with the tab.

There are millions of guitar pro tabs out there. I have about 40,000 different G.P tabs on my hard drive. Very very cool program.

I just downloaded Guitar Pro and a track of Money by Pink Floyd. It reminded me of the good ol' days when I would listen to music on my C64.

Good call. You can't go wrong with this program, it has everything you need and then some. Did you get the RSE packs with the download? (can't remember if they came with the main program or not).
