I was at an open jam one night and I went on and played before him, He watched awhile then left only to come right back (He lived blocks away) with his own portable rig! Walter woods head w/ 2x10 cab. we talked when I came off and he introduced himself. We talked for about 15 minutes (till he went on) and he's just a regular jeans wearing sneaker wearing kinda guy! And he was playing a 98 MIA sunburst jazz with action to die for! I'm talking real nice! Btw, he said He went home to get his stuff because (as he put it I sounded soo good) he wanted to sound good but didn't want to depend on the equipment I was coming through, we both laughed at that!

Pretty sure it is Upchurch on "Six To Four"...a very cool tune that we covered way back when (damn, now I'm really missing those daze of the mid-to-late '70s).
My 1st exposure to Upchurch's playing was on the 1st Jazz album I actually spent my own money on...Benson's Bad Benson(CTI Records). Upchurch's rhythm guitar playing on this is stellar.
From that same album, Upchurch also played electric bass on a tune called "Full Compass"...a nicely executed bass etude, IMO.

I thought it was Upchurch as well but he's also well known as a guitarist!

Phil Upchurch played bass on Breezin' and Six To Four on that album. I dug his bass playing in the 70's, he's on a bunch of LPs playing bass.
