Getting this tone...?

Ok,

I have a video of a John Mayer song, "Heartbreak Warfare". Palladino played this line in the studio, but he isn't in the video. I wanted to see how the bassist in the video is getting that "fat" sound. I know that half of the battle is the P-Bass, however, I have a J-Bass, but want something closer to this sound. How can I head in that direction?

Emphasize lower mids, reduce top end. Fingerstyle over the pickup, ala the bass player in the video.
