Getting in touch with my REAL Hip-Hop Side

I remember back in middle school when I used to listen to a little bit of Mos Def. I went over to my friends house and was looking through his Music Library and he had most of Black on Both Sides. Needless to say, I burned a CD, brought her home, and have been listening to it non-stop. "Umi Says" is beautiful, and "Hip Hop" is just awesome. So now that my real hip-hop flame has been re-lit, I went on LivePlasma and looked for some artists similar to Mos Def. They recommended De La Soul and The Roots. I see many people talk about The Roots here on TB, and I used to listen to some DLS a long time ago but don't remember any, SO I must ask, which CD's should I get? Any other recommendations for "conscious" rap would be awesome.

Game Theory by the Roots is really good. Also, anything by Common, or taleb kweli, who are conscious rappers. Now, to throw a monkey wrench in the mix, my personal preference is the late Tupac Shakur, who, if you can overlook all the gangsta rap, has some socially conscisous music. Many people deride him, but if you take a close listen, he was truly a gifted poet, until he went to the dark side (Death Row Records). After that, it's all party music, but I still like all of it.

For De la Soul start with Three Feet High and Rising then go from there. De la Soul is Dead is the next album, then Buhloone Mind State. Those are they're best albums to me anyways. I still like them a lot but their style has changed a lot over the the years.

The Roots, hmmm... The Roots Come Alive - very good live album, Do You Want More, Things Fall Apart, Phrenology.

You could also check out A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory, Midnight Murauders, and Beats Rhymes and Life. For newer stuff I would check out Josh Martinez, Aesop Rock ( I named my dog after his song Lucy), maybe Atmosphere.

Tribe, Roots, De La, Erykah Badu, Common, Fugees -- all awesome stuff,
Also Old Snoop Dogg and Tupac have awesome bass lines and grooves, snoop is mostly parliament samples but they are really good if you can block out the gangta rap over the top
