Give me some names of some good urban gospel cd's to pick up.

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for some good urban gospel cd's to pick up so I can study the bass lines played on them. I love gospel bassists and their style. I play some of that stuff in my church but I'm trying to get deeper into it and challenge myself. I love the Chicago Mass Choir's stuff, well the upbeat stuff anyway. Anyone else???

Individual songs are cool to mention too. I can download them on itunes.

Will do. Thanks!!!

BTW, I recently played Fred Hammond's "We're Blessed", and that was a fun groove to play. Got a lot of compliments on my playing on that one.

Capn, thanks for the post, subscribed!

My church has played a couple really fun ones:
Crown Him with Many Crowns - Michael W. Smith
Another Chance - Resurrection Life Church

one I really want to play:
We've Come to Give Him Praise - Clint Brown

I wish we played more though... Stuff like this is few and very far between. My "contemporary" choir is more "contemplative." Very rarely do I get to slap & pop.

Will check out Fred Hammond and am looking forward to hearing what other people add, maybe I can find some sweet stuff to bring in and say, "we NEED to play THIS!"

Thanks for the recommendations. I hear you on the contemplative comment. My church sometimes has a complex when it comes to being challenged. I think if it weren't for myself and a few others we'd still be singing some basic stuff. Nothing wrong with basic stuff mind you, I just like to be challenged sometimes.

Here is a SLEW of artists that have what I'm thinking you are needing/wanting:

Colorado Mass Choir (So Good is GREAT)
Kirk Franklin (by far the most popular urban gospel dude out there right now)
Anointed Pace Sisters (some slower jams but great!)
Israel Houghton and New Breed
Myron Butler & Levi (perfect example of urban gospel - just great stuff! Check out "Set Me Free")
Byron Cage (get the live CD, and/or his other newest studio release)
Donald Lawrence (for that matter get the whole CD called "The Covenant)
Tye Tribbett (Thaddeus Tribbett is his brother and KILLING on the bass)
Martha Munizzi
Mary Alessi (Martha and Mary are twin sisters)
Hezekiah Walker
Dietrick Haddon (wow, awesome stuff on the live CD)
Joe Pace (he works with the Colorado Mass Choir, so just get the CMC stuff)
Fred Hammond (as mentioned earlier)

Will post more when I find them, but this should get you started for sure!

hey: check out these guys

Do a search for any projects with Darrell Freeman, Joel Smith, Jimmy Neuble, Andrew Gouche, Sharay Reed, and Maurice Fitzgerald. These are the top gopsel bassists. Simply doing a google search should get you a discography for each player. If you are still having problems finding projects--hit me up!!!

I already saw the clip of Sharay Reed playing with those 2 drummers. That gave me goose bumps. Man that dude's got chops. I've seen plenty of Andrew Gouche clips also. He's another one I'm striving to play like. One day I tell ya....

I love Israel Houghton and New Breed on their album "Another Level" or a different level, or something like that. I also like gospel bassists, but gospel drummers... they just blow me away, like Chris Coleman on that recording.

You might also check with your local library to see what they have. I was surprised to see that my library has a pretty fair amount of what's been mentioned, but I'm in Denver.

Almost anything that was recorded 'live'! There are so many really good bassists/basslines on the live stuff, it's not even funny! Check out some of the older style stuff too in the vein of The Williams Brothers!

Just listened to some John P. Kee and was blown away by the playing. I don't know who his bassist is but he's good.

Here's a few:

-The Anointed Pace Sisters-Return, with the amazing Darrell Freeman on bass

-New Direction-Get Your Praise On, with Sharay Reed and Kern Brantley on bass and Send the Praise, with Rodney Jones on bass

-Edward Buckley & Unity in Spirit-Open for Discussion, Darrell Freeman and Jeremy Thomas. You have never heard gospel like this before!!!! CD available at CD Baby website.

-Youthful Praise-Thank You for the Change, with Dwayne Wright and Keith Harper, Live....The Praise.....The Worship, with Asa Ace Livingston and Keith Harper, and Awesome God, with Keith Harper.

-Anything by Joe Pace with the very sick Simeon Baker.

Obviously, there's a whole lot more, but this should wet your appetite!

Glad to hear you mention John P Kee - insane stuff. His Not Guilty double CD is sick - particularly "Rain On Us" from that CD. Some sick bass and drums there. I also love Kim Burrell's stuff - Try Me Again and Everlasting Life (I think that's the one) are amazing - if the second is the one I'm thinking of -- no, wait, it's "Over and Over Again" that has Joel Smith layin it down something fierce.

The other stuff mentioned is fantastic as well, can't go wrong with any of it. But definitely check out these two I mentioned!
