I know that Talkbass is filled with hc Rush lovers, and so it would be cool if somebody would give me a tip of from what albums to start to listen to these fellows. Ive heard there songs on a small scale and I have absorbed the fact that they are good. Very good.'
I imagine a thread like this has been made before, but I just do not have the strength to look through the 500 posts made in just the last three months about Rush. The band seems to be a rather popular subject here. |

My personal favorite is Moving Pictures, which for me is timeless, and simultaneously full of hooks, technical prowess, and great lyrics and topics.
Since it's so variable depending on whom you ask, I wonder if it'd be workable to give a listen to the samples on I-Tunes or something like that, and then pick an album yourself.
Other albums for me (and why):
- Permanent Waves (unbelievable bass, great song writing)
- Hemispheres (indulgent but wonderful ultra prog songs)
- Signals (contains some wonderful bass work, and an interesting departure for them musically)
- Power Windows (gosh, the bass tone. Who doesn't want a Wal? Sounds dated with the 80's hyper production)
- Counterparts (a return to grit).
Note that I'm biased towards Rush. If they put out a polka album I'll likely check it out.

| | | | I think that Ill fetch myself a live cd from them, to give a basic view of their "hit" material. Any suggestions?
From there I could then start to find their other albums, which seem to be all quite appreciated. Still open to all opinions. |

| I agree with this part too, which is bad because I often listen to this album at work.

My first Rush album was 2112 and I love that one too.

I believe that general era for music as a whole was the very height of production, and is a timeless, beautiful sound. The wide-open chorus on the guitar and reverb on the drums is a wash of pleasing sounds that I don't think gets old. I get the same feeling when I hear the Rippingtons, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, 80's Yes, Peter Gabriel, and so on. Engineering since then has been typified by over-compression and blatantly stupid gain staging, as well as a more "confined" sound through using too little reverb. Each genre has its own set of requirements, of course, but on the whole I think engineering has gone waaaay downhill since about 1990. |

rushradio.com is fun to check out the range. |

| | | Start out with a best of CD.
Look in the used bin and you should be able to buy one at a good price. Or check Amazon for great deals on used, if your local used stores don't have any.
Chronicles 2 CD set is a good one.
Spirit of the Radio is also good.
Rush Retrospective I & II are ok,but not as good.
Just released is Rush "GOLD" 2 CD set, 29 songs, i picked up a brand new promo one on Amazon for $8.78 total with the shipping.
As far as the other CD's, if you like Rush, you should get them all. I must have between 25-30 Rush CD's including the ones i posted above.

2112
Hemispheres
Moving Pictures
A Farewell to Kings
Exit Stage Left
and any more live stuff you can.
