GK 1001RB out Recording

Okay I am currently using a GK 1001RB and Avatar 410RB, with a Jazz bass with Ultra jazzes; it sounds sweet. Very punchy, full, and not too twangy.
Unfortunately when I run it out through the XLR out, it sounds like crap with the post and pre eq on and off. The detail is lost, which I hate considering I got it where I want it.
Is this a common problem with the direct out from amps? Do you recommend micing it? I don't want to loose any of that organ rattlingness that I get from it. Granted you won't feel that in a recording anyway, but I just want that live sound on my recording.

A good D.I. box is always one hell of an investment.

Whenever I have recorded I mixed a DI box with a mic and messed with the mix till I got what I wanted.

Guess a Sansamp DI is probably a good idea then, eh?

That amp records very sweetly, but you probably need a mic as well as a transparent DI.

I've recorded with it in a recording studio and the recording sounded even better than live.

For the mic they tilted my cab at this weird angle and it was in a sound booth away from me and the amp, output from the XLR and mic were blended.
