I can give you a bunch of examples of gospel: John P. Kee (particularly
Blessed By Association and
Not Guilty, a two CD set under the New Life Community Choir name), all of his CD's are excellent. I agree, Fred Hammond is fantastic, although some of his newer stuff is more R&B flavored. Kim Burrell's stuff is the
jam! Try Me Again and
Everlasting Life have some phenomenal playing on them, and the compositions are great, in my opinion. Israel is great, Kirk Franklin is awesome, Hezekiah Walker and his LFT Choir stuff are fantastic as well. Bishop Paul Morton and Donnie McClurkin (
Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs is mostly ballady stuff but the "I Love To Praise Him's" are awesome), there are lots of great gospel artists out there.
As far as gospely "secular" stuff, the Badu Live CD is her best work, in my opinion. Although I do dig her other stuff it's more R&B. Frank McComb's
Love Stories has some serious playing by Richard Bona on it, and Frank is both an amazing vocalist and keyboard player. Rachelle Farrell's
Individuality (Can I Be Me?) album is loaded with great playing. Jef Lee Johnson wears it out on that CD. Prince's
The Rainbow Children album -

. Although it's a bit different, Oteil and the Peacemakers
Family Secret is sort of southern gospely/jazzy/funky -- check it out.
Hope that's helped. Gospel rules!
