Hi all,
I play bass in a student gospel choir, and we recorded a CD earlier. Now it is done, and I've been able to upload some sound clips to my web page: http://hallgeir.no/bass/ansgar/ags-cd/
Check them out.
The fifth sound clip isn't us - that's the Arc Singers from New Orleans who have three tracks on the CD.
All my bass tracks were recorded using my two main instruments: a Benavente Vortex fretless 6-string and a Surine Regency X fretted 6-string. Both were played through my Roland V-Bass system, I didn't use the instrument's regular pickup sounds at all.
Please let me know if something isn't working with the sound clips - I'm not entirely sure I did the technical stuff correctly.
Perhaps later I'll write something about how I used the V-Bass on the recording.

It works very well live, and - as I suspected - it records great too. I had no power over the mixing process though, so it's possible that they did some stuff there that I don't know about. It sounded magnificent when we were listening to the recording in the control room though.
I wish I could upload all of the tracks in their entirety, simply because I think most of them are rather good.... alas I can't. They'd like to sell some CDs too, or so they say.

The CD is a school project and is not being distributed for sale. We do bring it and sell it at our concerts though, but that doesn't help most of you very much. Sorry about that.
However, I have uploaded another sound clip to the web page, which has a bit of mellow fretless playing in it. I don't remember which V-Bass model I used for that track, but judging from the sound it wasn't the fretless model, but rather my Smith imitation or something.... what do you think it sounds like? (I should have made notes, I know....)

I have used a fretless for gospel, but I felt it really sounded weak compared to a fretted bass. What is the secret of your great sound?

For those interested, here is the track list, copied from the CD cover (and thus, if there are errors, they are sic):
1. The Blessing of Abraham (Donald Lawrence)
2. Set Me Free (Myron Butler)
3. Where I long to be (Norman Hutchins & Jason White)
4. Be it unto me (Aaron Lindsey)
5. Lift Him Up (Joeworn Martin)
6-7. Bless Me (Richard Smallwood & Andrae Crouch)
8. God Is (Calvin Bernhard Rhone)
9. Deliver (James J. Hairston)
10. Matthew 28 (Shawn MC Mullen)
11. The least I can do (Smokie Norful & Logan Reynolds)
And, BTW, if you're really interested in obtaining a copy of the CD, PM me and we might be able to work something out. After all, personally I'd very much like others to hear it, being rather proud of it myself, if for no other reason than me having contributed to it, if you know what I mean.

Great stuff, really like your take on these songs and your bass parts really added to the whole thing. Mucho respect.

We are going to visit New Orleans for a week in January, mostly for our own education though: we'll be attending services in various black churches. Maybe we'll perform occationally as well.
And I'm being told we'll record another album later in the spring as well, which ought to be good fun.

| | Registered User Proprietor, Helland Musikk Teknologi | | Join Date: Apr 2004 Location: Norway | | Hello again,
It has been a year since last time - and now we've done it again. The new CD is actually much like the previous one in style, but different songs and most of the musicians are different from last year, too. Only I and the keyboard player / leader remain.
And there are sound clips, short ones, available right here for your convenience.
Some details. As last year, I used my fretted and fretless 6 string basses (Surine and Benavente) and the Roland V-Bass does all the sound. Actually, this year we also recorded the direct bass sound (through a Milennia TD-1 pre-amp/DI) but the V-Bass sounded so good that they used that for everything I'm told. Some photos from the band session (the singers were not there when we recorded, and I wasn't there when they recorded).
The band is me on bass, one drummer, two guitar players, organ, piano, keys (strings, wind, synth), and horns: two cornets, one alto saxophone and one tenor saxophone.

Due to popular demand, I've uploaded another clip, from the ending of a song, which has a bit more prominent bass sound. Here is a direct link to the mp3 file.
