Grand Designs (YouTube content)

Here's my second YouTube video, a cover of Rush's Grand Designs. I used the technique of recording the audio and video separately, then joining them up with Windows Movie Maker. My version of WMM came with WinXP, so it's not the most current version, and it wouldn't let me join the audio and video exactly, so there's a very slight delay between the fingering of the note and the sound, but it's just a few milliseconds, so it's almost not noticeable. The P-Bass added a bit more bottom than Geddy's bass did, but that's OK, I don't have a Jazz or a Wal lying around!

This was the sixth take I did. The old saying that "amateurs do it until they get it right and pros do it until they're never wrong" is so apparent when recording yourself.

Not bad. I think if you had a little more confidence while playing, your playing would come alive more. I kinda felt like you were "trying to keep up". It was good, just own it next time.

Yeah, I think you're right. It's weird, but when I play it without a camera filming me, I feel like I do own the song. But when I'm filming I feel like I've got a bunch of other things to worry about besides my playing, including not making mistakes and having to start over. Maybe as I do more of these covers I'll get it down and do better, but at this stage of the game I'm about as satisfied as I'm going to be with this cover.
