Great Bands, Bad Singers

Cedric Bixler-Zavala - The Mars Volta

James LaBrie - Dream Theater

The two I can come up with at the moment, I know there's more out there!

I really like Alkaline Trio's recordings, but live the vocals leave a bit to be desired.

I love Howard Stern's rants on how a bad singer can totally ruin a band. He'll play a song, comment on how good the music sounds, then he'll say, "...and here comes the singer to F it all up!" And sure enough...

to me good = honest and emotional. I would consider Cedric to be one of the better vocalists around.

To paraphrase Chet Atkins, it takes a really good singer to be better than no singer.

Having said that, Jim Morrison. Axel Rose. Zach from RATM. And +100 on the Mars Volta singer.

Do flameproof underwear itch much? I have a feeling I should get some...

Much as I love Joy Division, Ian Curtis was not a master of vocal technique.

Chet was right, rest his soul.

And while I don't know anything about the Mars Volta, you shouldn't get much flaming over Axl Rose. That whole wannabe Robert Plant thing should have played out decades ago. In fact, Plant himself should have put an end to it.

I will add to this not a group, but one song: I Believe In Miracles (You Sexy Thang) by Hot Chocolate. Worst. Singing performance. Ever.

isaac brock from modest mouse, although i will say his singing style fits the band better than that of a better vocalist would.

I do like his abstract lyrics, but his voice makes me want to punch small animals
