The original Soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar had some fantastic playing by the late, great Alan Spenner. This was the record that made me a bass player in September 1980.

Who's Next. I've heard bass through the prism of Enwtistle's playing on that ever since. I always imagine how he would approach a song, except when listening to the Dead, because Phil's approach is hard to reimagine.

Well when I first decided I wanted to play an instrument (and bass was tossed around by my friends), I didn't even know what bass sounded like. I took a friends system of a down album of all things, and just listened for bass lines. Then I started listening to the radio, and it was about the time Tool had just released Lateralus and Schism was playing on the radio.

I had probably heard that song on the radio about 20 times before I picked up on the fact that that main riff was bass. So I pickup up lateralus and listened to it a million billion times.

Gene Simmons made me want to play the bass,

Steve Harris and Bob Daisley made me want to work hard at being a good player,

Gary Willis made me want to study the bass, in depth.

So I'm going to go with: KISS Alive II, Number of the Beast/Piece of Mind, Blizzard of Oz/Diary of a Madman, and Bent/No Sweat.

It might be a bit biased, but I think the album "Foxtrot" by Genesis is a great "bassist's" album. It showcases the complex, the fast, the melodic, the harmony-accompany, and everything in-between.
