Great Bass Lines Not Recorded on Bass

"Like a Prayer" - Madonna. Not an ounce of real bass on the track, but it is a great line that will have you woodshedding for days.

Others?

Not fact at all. Check out the Quincy Jones produced albums. Plenty of live bass to be had by Bobby Watson, Louis Johnson, Nathan East. Terry Jackson, Abe Laborial & Roy Lawrence played on earlier LP's. His first few LP's almost assuredly had Jamerson or whoever played for The Corporation.

Wasn't that Guy Pratt playing bass with an octave pedal? So it is a real bass.

I think that Like a Prayer was actually played by the great Guy Pratt. The line went through an octaver which gives it a synth like vibe but it was bass guitar. The guy writes some really funny stuff about the stars he played for. I think he said that Madonna loved what he did on Like a Prayer. He has some story about Michael Jackson (who's also been mentioned here) giving feedback on session musicians' tracks while hiding under a mixing desk. Google him - he's quite entertaining.

Check the credits. Most of the tracks had Louis Johnson doubling on electric bass. Steve Lukather played bass on "Beat It."

Bernie Worrell, on many P-Funk jams like Flashlight, Knee Deep, and One Nation Under a Groove.

Wow, I had no idea. Johnson must be pretty quiet in the mix.
