Hmm...there are numerous solos that last way beyond 30 seconds. Not that time would make one solo better than another - but that is another discussion.

Anyway...

Take Matt Garrison's solo from Herbie Hancock's Future 2 Future Live - absoltely amazing. Anthony Tidd, of Quite Sane, has a wonderful solo on the track Once as Queens.

Cliff Burton's "*bass solo take 1"
on metallica's kill em' all
he has also had other bass solo's/riffs on: ride the lightning and master of puppets
he is the first person i heard do a "bass solo" on a recording but
after reading above posts i'll have to check those out.

*a.k.a.- pulling teeth

Cliff Burton of Metallica's 'song' is called 'Pulling Teeth'...not 'Bass Solo Take 1' as stated by Dougray.

JMX beat me to it. Willie Weeks on "Donny Hathaway Live". This is a MUST HAVE album, without question.
Also, anything on Paul Chambers' "Bass On Top". This to me is another essential listen/ own.
Also a shout out to Kim Stone on his "More Often Than Not" CD. Some great bass composition.

There are so many great solos, but those three are a little obscure, so worth bringing to light.

Jonas Hellborg: album: Personae - lots of solo's lasting minutes long

Jeff Berlin: album: Alan Holldsworth Road games - Track 3 i think crazy long solo.

Dave Larue - takes quite a few solo's on any Steve morse band/ Dixie dregs album, usually not too long though.

"Ten Mile Jog" by George Duke. The song is 11:27 long, and while there is no distinct bass solo, the whole thing is a friggin' solo.

That Face The Music CD is one of the greatest CD's of all time!
