Great Gospel on a Four!

Great instrumental for the 4:44, the rest is a sermon by Hezekiah Walker. The bassist is using some sort of red jazz with a Hipshot D-tuner.

HI

Slammin' band. Looks like a Pensa. I use a 4 string twice a week at church. 5's and 6's are overrated!!

The whole part of the vid UP TO 4:44 is the music....

And that Reggie Parker is definitely killing it!

Question for you knowledgeable gospel folks...

Is it common for the bass to be so prominent in this music? It sounds great, but if I tried playing unison melody lines on a gig, I'd get evil looks!

It seems as if the bass is getting even higher status and prominence than the rest of the band. Or does that just have to do with this particular bassist?

Either way, I highly enjoyed that.

All of the gospel videos I have seen, yes, Joe, the bass is always prominent.

The bass carries the song 99% of the time. It's out front and very noticable, but you can get away without a bass player.

It's a gift and a curse because the moment you slip EVERYONE knows it.

I hear this a lot amongst other musicians in gospel talking to the bass player "doc, just turn up and play"

A Pensa? No wonder he sounds so good! I played a few in Manhattan around New Years, and I was in love. Too bad they cost even more than Sadowskys.

I know I played 19mm five and a a really sweet 17.5mm five, both were $4,000.

I have been using a four in church more myself. I like fives and sixes, and the low notes are nice, I just think that old fashioned EADG (with a D sometimes) works just fine 95% of the time.

So I guess if I ever fill in playing gospel, I'll have to crank up the bass and try to accept being the centre of attention...

Sounds nice, actually. Usually I'm hidden behind one or two guitarists with cymbals in my face and I can barely hear myself...

I don't go to church very often, but if going to church meant I got to play bass in a band like that, I would go often!

I believe Reggie tunes his 4st Pensa BEAD.

Amen on that. I'm the bassist at my church where the soundman controls most of my volume, my rig volume is low.

However I am the bassist for an urban group as well. I never seem to be loud enough..took a while to get used to but man is it great now.

When he was playing the melody, he sounded like he had standard tuning to my ears.
